Work Identity.

In today's fast-paced world, finding a harmonious balance between work and personal life is essential for overall well-being. But what exactly is work identity? Work identity encompasses the meaning that individuals attach to themselves within the context of their professional lives. While a strong work identity can foster job satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment, it can also lead to over-identification with work, potentially blurring the lines between professional and personal life. Striking a balance is key, as over-identifying with work may result in neglecting other important domains of life and leave you feeling inauthentic, burnt out, disconnected, unfulfilled, unhappy, and lacking purpose or meaning in life.

Work-Life Balance.

When it comes to achieving work-life balance, it's essential to understand the domains that contribute to overall well-being. According to quality of life research, these domains include education, health, leisure, friendships, romantic relationships, family, household management, and community involvement. Balancing these domains requires conscious effort and prioritisation to ensure that no aspect of life is neglected.

Wisdom From the Elderly.

On the topic of living life, I have recently returned from a year's lap around Australia with my fiancé, travelling in our 4WD. While I was away, I read the book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, which sheds light on the importance of prioritising life over work. Ware, an Australian palliative care nurse, identified the top regrets of her elderly patients, with common themes revolving around authenticity, connection, and living in alignment with one's true self. These regrets serve as a poignant reminder to work less and live more, emphasising the significance of nurturing relationships, expressing feelings, and pursuing happiness.

So, What Do You Do?

A month ago, I ventured back into the corporate space after a year away, and the most common question I encounter at networking events has been "So, what do you do?" I have made it my mission to lead by example and rather than solely defining oneself by my occupation, I take a more holistic approach. I challenge the status quo by highlighting various aspects of my life, such as passions, hobbies, other life roles, and values. After all, these are things that I also care about, and in my opinion, are better indicators of what constitutes my identity, make me feel alive and make me human.

When the tables turn and you have just been introduced to someone, I invite you to encourage deeper conversations by asking thought-provoking questions like: "What are you most passionate about?" "If money were no object, what would you do with your life?" "What do you like to do for fun?" or "What’s the best thing that happened to you this week?" Watch how these types of questions make for a deeper, more authentic, engaging, and inspiring conversation and maybe even foster a higher quality connection.

To conclude, here are five tips to avoid over-identifying with work from some of the important roles that constitute me: a loyal fiancé, doting dog-mum, quality friend, devoted daughter, nature-lover, traveller, forever student, health-conscious individual, and a psychologist and performance coach. I hope that these tips help you to cultivate a more balanced life and foster deeper connections so that you can truly make the most out of your limited time here on this planet…

  1. Set clear boundaries: Establish limitations on work-related activities to make the most of your time outside of work.

  2. Prioritise relationships: Invest in high-quality connections with friends, family, and loved ones to foster a sense of belonging and support.

  3. Pursue passions: Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfilment, whether it's hobbies, travel, or personal interests.

  4. Embrace authenticity: Be true to yourself in both personal and professional interactions, allowing for genuine connections and meaningful experiences.

  5. Embrace imperfection: Recognise that life is messy, and it's okay to not have everything perfectly balanced. Focus on progress, not perfection. Trust me, it is more fun that way.
